Over six hundred runners took part in the Waterbeach Running Festival on Saturday 13th May.
The event – held on the former Barracks and Airfield – raises money to support Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup to continue to provide excellent pre-school education and care for children in and around Waterbeach. The charity run preschool caters for children aged 2 ½ – 5 years old.
In the 5km race, defending male champion Tony Bacon from Saffron Striders retained his title and Yvonne Scarrott was the first female home. Jack Blaiklock from Thames Hare and Hounds and Alison Stewart from Ely Runners triumphed in the 10km distance. There were also age group prizes for children in the 2km and everyone received a Douglass Digital sponsored medal when they finished.
Reflecting on the day Jessica Kitt from the organising committee, said: “It was a great day, everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and we’ve smashed our fundraising target for the Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup. We think we’ve raised nearly four thousand pounds so a big thank you to everyone who took part and also to the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the event possible.”
She added: “Watching the under fives take part in their 100m Toddle was perhaps one of the most entertaining moments with children running – or not – in all directions.”
Five kilometers competitor Jon Evans from Ely Runners agreed saying: “It was such a well organised event, it had a great family feel about it and distances for all age groups. The surface was ideal for a personal best and it was an added bonus to have the Waterbeach Brass Band playing with 500m to go! It was a most enjoyable morning.”
The event also included a Festival Village offering a range of refreshments, activities including a bouncy castle & slide, Wild Thyme and Embers bushcraft activities, children’s colouring corner, giant jenga, giant connect four, and stalls from partners.
